Santos y Ríos has one of Mexico's smaller competition practices, but size has not dented its prospects.

One associate assists him. A key client is Ferrosur, a railway company caught up in one of Mexico's trickiest mergers and a related cartel investigation. Santos y Ríos also advised beverage company Pernod Ricard on its acquisition of Absolut Vodka. The practice also advised Saudi Basic Industries Corporation on its US$11.6 billion acquisition of General Electric's plastics division. Mergers make up 80 per cent of the firm's competition workload, with the remainder of the docket being compliance counselling. Santos, who local lawyers say is second only to Gabriel Castañeda by reputation, says that the plan is to angle into investigatory work.
