It has been quite a year for Mayer Brown, with the addition of two heavyweight antitrust partners. Last October, the esteemed Donald C Klawiter joined the firm's Washington, DC, office, while former DG Comp unit head Andres Font Galarza joined in January. The firm now boasts an impressive eight Who's Who nominees worldwide. The firm's reach includes substantial parts of Asia, where the firm has established a better, more substantial competition presence than many of its US and European rivals.
Never one to shy away from a tough case, the Mayer Brown team this year fought for, and eventually won, merger clearance for client Allied Waste in its merger with rival Republic Services, and represented AstraZeneca before the Court of First Instance in its challenge of a DG Comp pharmaceutical case - a case that opened the doors for the commission's continuing pharmaceutical sector investigation. Notably, the firm also represented Cypress Semiconductor Corporation in the DoJ's grand jury investigation into the SRAM industry - an investigation the DoJ eventually called off without bringing charges.
