Marques Mendes & Associados is unique. All of Portugal's major competition practices are part of a larger firm with a corporate practice, except Marques Mendes. Members of name partner Mario Marques Mendes's Lisbon team are renowned as competition specialists. The team comprises partners Marques Mendes and Pedro Vilarinho Pires, together with one senior associate and three associates. Marques Mendes, who is described by one rival as "one of Portugal's best-known competition lawyers", is a Who's Who nominee.
The firm has an impressive client roster, including General Motors, Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, Siemens, Gas de France and Google. Last year, the firm advised General Motors on various state aid issues relating to investment contracts. It is working for port services company ETE on merger control issues surrounding a public bid for the concession of port services in Lisbon.
Marques Mendes also continue to advise RTP, the state-owned TV broadcaster, on state aid issues raised in connection with the company's financial restructuring.
