LMR Attorneys is the closest thing that Finland has to a competition boutique. LMR last featured in the GCR 100 in 2006.
The team currently includes seven competition specialists. The past year saw several changes within the ranks, including the departure of specialist counsel Marjo Ojala. Partner and Who's Who nominee Jukka Luostarinen leads the practice, and says the firm is looking to hire one more attorney who specialises in competition law.
LMR continues to represent some of the biggest corporate names in Finland. It has represented NCC in the extensive asphalt cartel case; UPM-Kymmene in a suspected paper cartel investigation before the authority; Viasat/Modern Times Group; The Nielsen Company; National Railways; HOK-Elanto Group; and others in recent competition matters.
LMR has a leading antitrust/competition law practice in Finland. LMR's practice is also clearly one of the biggest antitrust/competition practices in Finland. LMR's competition cases represent the full spectrum of both EU and Finnish competition law: merger control, cartel investigations, horizontal and vertical agreements, abuses of dominance, compliance programs and training, litigation and public procurement. LMR continuously represents large international companies.
LMR has particularly strong experience in defending clients in cartel cases before both the European and Finnish competition authorities and courts, including some of the biggest cases ever. LMR is one of the only two law firms representing a client in both of the two largest cartel cases ever in Finland.
LMR also regularly advises both foreign and national clients on merger control related procedures and issues, whether European or national.
Due to LMR's antitrust/competition lawyers' active involvement in the work of the government's working group on the amendments needed to the current Competition Act, they have an in-depth understanding of the working group's January 2009 proposal to enact a new Competition Act, including substantial changes compared to the current act.
LMR's antitrust/competition lawyers have also carefully followed the fast developing area of private enforcement of competition rules (claims for damages) and have strong experience in litigation and arbitration.
Many of LMR's antitrust/competition lawyers have worked and studied also abroad, e.g. in the Competition DG of the European Commission, in the Brussels office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, at King's College London, at Columbia University in New York etc. They are also frequent speakers in conferences and seminars and have published books and articles on both EU and Finnish competition law.
