The ever-expanding practice at antitrust and competition powerhouse Howrey has had an excellent year. It is still - by far - the largest competition practice in the world, with more than 350 specialists on both sides of the Atlantic. But through lateral hires and one strategic acquisition, Howrey has become the best competition practice in Spain as well as one of the market leaders in Washington, DC and Brussels. Last year, when Howrey merged with Spanish boutique Martínez Lage, it became host to some of the country's best competition lawyers and top-tier clients in one of the fastest growing markets for competition work.

To pick just a handful of the many headline-grabbing cases Howrey worked on this year: it won clearance for Nestlé in its US$5.5 billion acquisition of the Gerber baby food business from Novartis, advised Schering-Plough Corporation in both the US and EU in its €11 billion acquisition of Organon BioSciences NV, and represented Anheuser-Busch in the US and the EU in its US$52 billion takeover by Belgian brewer InBev, which will create the world's largest brewer and will be the third-largest takeover of any US company in history.

The firm is also representing Qualcomm in the European Commission's continuing investigation into an alleged article 82 infringement; United Airlines in the European Commission investigation into an alleged cartel in the air cargo business; International Air Transport Association in the US multidistrict class action litigation alleging price fixing of air cargo surcharges; and Intel Corporation in a section 2 monopolisation case filed by its rival Advanced Micro Devices, which is one of the largest

antitrust-intellectual property interface cases ever litigated.

Howrey LLP

The Competition Practice at Howrey covers all areas of government, mergers and acquisitions, private litigation, and criminal antitrust matters. Antitrust is the original practice area upon which the firm was founded in 1956 and built its initial reputation. Today, Howrey's team of more than 300 antitrust lawyers and specialists in the US and in Europe is the largest in the world outside of the US government. Howrey's Brussels office staffs over 40 competition lawyers from ten different nations.

In 2008, Howrey's Competition Practice increased its depth with the addition of Spain's renowned antitrust firm - Martinez Lage.

Howrey's Competition Practice includes a large number of former Federal Trade Commission (FTC), US Department of Justice (DOJ) and European Commission's Directorate General for European Competition (DG Competition) officials, several American Bar Association Antitrust Section chairs, and trial lawyers who have taken numerous antitrust cases through trial. They have accumulated unparalleled experience in the full spectrum of today's complex antitrust issues, with their wide range of experience in domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, government criminal and civil investigations, and private antitrust litigation.

Over the last ten years, Howrey attorneys have served as trial counsel on about 40 percent of all civil antitrust cases brought to trial by the US Department of Justice and Federal TradeCommission. Howrey currently represents parties in one-third of all pending private US antitrust multidistrict (MDL) litigation. Howrey also manages and coordinates filings in more than 40 countries around the world. Howrey's competition lawyers possess varied and complementary strengths. The group has a substantive understanding of antitrust principles, a strong knowledge of, and expertise in, government antitrust policy and practices and outstanding litigation and trial skills. Many of the lawyers regularly appear before, and understand the policies, procedures, and analytical constructs of, the antitrust enforcement agencies in the US and Europe.
