Also in the second tier is Dryllerakis & Associates. Name partner John Dryllerakis sat on the competition commission's committee between 1990 and 1995 and was in-house counsel at Esso during the 1970s.
Two further partners and one associate work with Dryllerakis on competition matters, making up almost a fifth of the firm's 21 lawyers. The other lawyers have a range of business law practices, from arbitration to securities and intellectual property.
Dryllerakis says that in the past two-and-a-half years, they were 'involved in most of the big cases'. As well as advising on the Shell cartel case, he is working for the Athens Port Authority. The authority is fighting claims that a contract offering privileged terms to a shipping company, MSE, in exchange for certain usage of a container terminal, is abuse of dominance. The commission has threatened fines of up to €5 million. Dryllerakis is also defending one of the alleged conspirators in the supermarkets cartel, which is now before the state counsel.
The firm specializes in competition law. "It is one of the more active in front of the Competition Committee" (Chambers, 2009) and it maintains a "dominant presence in competition practice" (Legal 500, 2009)
There is a strong, 5-member competition team, headed by John C. Dryllerakis (Managing Senior Partner). The other members of the competition team are Emmanuel Dryllerakis (Partner), Cleomenis Yannikas (Senior Associate), Aliki Damilaki (Junior Partner), Constantinos Spyropoulos (Junior Partner). John C. Dryllerakis had been a regular member of the national Competition Committee for six years and has done a lot of scientific works in this field. He was also a member of the Committee which prepared one of the basic amendments of the competition law (L.703/77). He is considered to be "a superb lawyer" (Chambers, 2009) "a prominent practitioner" and "a hugely experienced authority on the subject" (Chambers, 2008).
The well-experienced competition team, has developed over the years a broad awareness and deep understanding of sensitive competition issues, combining solid academic background with extensive antitrust practice and efficient involvement in most high-profile cases in Greece. "This boutique operation is consistently involved at the sharp end of major competition cases" (Chambers 2008). All the members of the team are also very active at a scientific level, whether by publishing books and articles in competition field and/or by participating in local and international scientific associations and competition events (conferences etc). The collection of competition legislative framework by the Managing Senior Partner, "The Protection of Free Competition" has been drafted with the active assistance of Cleomenis Yannikas and Emmanuel Dryllerakis and all the other members of the team.
The firm has handled numerous cases of notification of mergers or acquisitions as well as cases of alleged violation of Articles 1 & 2 of L.703/77 and, based on Regulation No. 1/2003 of the Council, alleged violation of Articles 81-82 of EU Treaty. Currently the firm, in addition to its other activities in the field and its involvement in other cases major or not, handles four of the biggest antitrust cases initiated against supermarkets, oil companies, a Port Authority and book editors and distributors for alleged concerted practices and/or alleged abuse of dominant position.
