At Crowell & Moring LLP, partner Randolph Smith chairs the firm's antitrust group. The firm has expanded over the past 12 months, with four lateral partner hires. Christine White, who moved from Bingham McCutchen LLP, has experience at the FTC, while Daniel Zelenko was with the national criminal enforcement section of the DoJ's antitrust division.

The firm's regular clients include AT&T, Robert Bosch and SAS Cargo. This year it handled AT&T's US$2.8 billion acquisition of Dobson Communications. The group has also added several other antitrust clients to its roster this year, including Nestlé, TCL Multimedia and UnitedHealth Group, which acquired Sierra Health Services for US$2.6 billion.

Crowell & Moring also advised Reed Elsevier in three transactions that received second requests for information from the antitrust agencies. Two of those reached consent decrees that required divestments.

The firm’s Antitrust Group represents a wide range of clients in many industries, from Fortune 50 companies to start-up companies. The group’s practice includes the full complement of transatlantic antitrust representation, including mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures; government investigations; civil litigation, including both traditional defence and private damages actions; cartel investigations and criminal defence matters; and compliance audits, training and counselling aimed at reducing the risks of litigation and criminal investigations. Recent matters include handling several multibillion dollar transactions in the telecommunications industry, including representing SBC/Cingular Wireless in its $41 billion acquisition of AT&T Wireless; SBC in its $16 billion acquisition of AT&T Corp.; and AT&T in its $86 billion acquisition of BellSouth. In the last year, the group also handled three major transactions for publishing client Reed Elsevier, a $5 billion outsourcing deal with IBM for AT&T as well as other outsourcing deals, a host of transactions in the healthcare industry and various matters in the food industry. The group also has a robust antitrust litigation docket which includes both civil litigation and criminal cartel work, and in the last year served as lead counsel for an international air cargo carrier in the global cartel investigation. Other Crowell & Moring antitrust clients include Alcoa, CSX Corporation, DuPont, Nestlé and United Technologies Corporation.
