Bowman Gilfillan

Professional notice

Bowman Gilfillan, led by Robert Legh, has grown significantly in recent years, and is the only South African firm with three nominees to The International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists: Derek Lotter, Jean Meijer and Legh.

The competition group practises from Johannesburg and Cape Town, and consists of 27 lawyers, including seven partners. Veronica Cadman was promoted to partner last year.

The firm has a strong list of international clients, including General Electric, General Motors and Pfizer. This year it represented the Reclamation Group following a commission investigation of the scrap metal industry. It has advised clients in the steel, bread, construction and airline industries in connection with antitrust investigations, and represented pharmaceutical company Merck in abuse of dominance proceedings relating to anti-retroviral drugs. It also settled a case for packaging company Nampak with no admission of liability in an alleged cartel in the glass recycling industry.

The practice worked on a number of merger filings too, including Yara/Growhow and Porsche/Volkswagen.

The firm says there has been a significant increase in the level of compliance work due to the commission's increased focus on cartels. It has also been advising clients and industry associations on the impending amendments to the country's competition act.
