The head of the antitrust practice at Borden Ladner Gervais, Robert S Russell, has long been seen as a talented and industrious member of Canada’s antitrust bar. Now, with the addition of dynamic and brainy Subrata Bhattacharjee and a team of associates, long-time antitrust observers are watching Canada’s largest law firm closely. Bhattacharjee joined from now-defunct Heenan Blaikie where he worked hard for years to grow a strong practice in international cartel defence and class action work. The clients speak for themselves: Samsung, Korean Airlines and Hitachi are some of the companies Bhattacharjee brought with him. Russell, meanwhile, was top of the ticket on the biggest case of 2013/2014: representing Loblaw in its C$12.4 billion takeover of Shoppers Drug Mart. The Bureau’s review ended after eight months with Loblaw selling 27 out of a possible 4,500 stores and pharmacies. “Rob and I believe that the future of this bar is in a US-style approach to antitrust,” Bhattacharjee told GCR. In the long run, he says, this will mean having a team that can do mergers and both civil and criminal litigation, and be able to adapt to shifts in the market.
