Yoon & Yang received a significant boost when the entire competition team at rival Barun Law joined in July 2012. The firm already boasts a Who’s Who Legalnominee: group leader Hoil Yoon. In April 2013, Chang Ho Kum, a rising star who left the firm in 2012 for Yulchon, returned to the firm and in early 2013, Kenneth T Kim and Song Ryu were promoted to partner. Counsel Hang Seok Chang departed earlier this year.
The firm is renowned as a litigation heavyweight, and the numerous high-profile proceedings on its books are testament to this. Yoon & Yang is defending a global elevator company in a damages action filed by the Korea Land and Housing Corporation regarding the KFTC’s elevator cartel decision. It is also representing SK Gas and SK Energy in a damages action filed against fuel suppliers after the KFTC’s fuel cartel decision. In addition, Yoon & Yang is representing MAN Bus & Truck in the KFTC’s cartel investigation involving commercial vehicles; and acting for Intel Semiconductor in its appeal against the KFTC’s abuse of dominance fine of 26 billion won.
Other high-profile investigations that Yoon & Yang is advising on include the Libor cartel probe and a KFTC abuse of dominance investigation of a US technology company over standard-essential patents. The firm also represented Ottogi in the KFTC’s instant noodle cartel investigation and continues to advise the company in its appeal against the authority’s fine and in the follow-on class actions that have recently been filed in the US. The firm is also acting for Daewoo Engineering & Construction in its appeal against a KFTC fine for alleged bid rigging on tenders for the Korean government’s project to restore four major rivers.
Merger work is steady, with Yoon & Yang representing an intervener before the KFTC in the Google/Motorola Mobility deal. The firm also advised Intel Semiconductor in its acquisition of mobile telecoms patents from InterDigital; video patents from RealNetworks; and GPS business from ST-Ericsson.
