With a range of high-profile work and close ties to top international firms, Russell McVeagh remains a leading competition group in New Zealand. The practice is headed by Who’s Who Legal nominee Sarah Keene after former co-head Andrew Peterson departed for the bar in June, but Keene says the firm continues to work with Peterson in his new role.
A significant matter on Russell McVeagh’s books over the past year was the refrigerator compressor cartel investigation, in which Keene represented Whirlpool; the company agreed a settlement. Other work includes advising packaging manufacturer Pact Group in its acquisition of rival Linpac, which was reviewed by both the New Zealand and Australian authorities, and advising Citigroup and Vivendi on the New Zealand aspects of selling EMI’s recorded music business to Universal Music.
Other major clients include Lion Group, Telecom New Zealand and Visy Industries.
Russell McVeagh's competition practice group is the pre-eminent competition law team in New Zealand, with a multi-disciplinary practice combining commercial and litigation specialists.
We act on leading competition law transactions and proceedings for a variety of New Zealand's largest corporates and multi-nationals, and are preferred by a number of international competition specialty practices.
The team's experience includes responding to investigations and prosecutions by New Zealand's Commerce Commission, obtaining clearances and authorisations of mergers, joint ventures and other behaviour arrangements and appeals of NZCC decisions.
We also have significant experience in preparing merger filings and responding to behavioural (including cartel) investigations on behalf of international clients.
Russell McVeagh maintain strong relationships with counsel based in Australia, the US and Europe and the competition team works effectively in a cross-border legal team environment.
The competition team is also supported by partners practising in public and regulatory work.
