Yoon & Yang

Professional notice

With names such as Microsoft, Qualcomm and Intel on its books, Yoon & Yang LLC is a leading competitor in the Korean bar. It continues to build a solid roster of international clients, and 2011 has brought a multitude of new instructions. Senior consultant and Who’s Who Legal nominee Joseph Seon Hur says: “Our firm is the clear alternative to Kim & Chang for many foreign clients needing representation in high-stakes competition cases in Korea.”

Among this year’s new cases, Yoon & Yang is representing a US information technology company in a KFTC abuse of dominance probe of smartphone operating systems. It also began advising a European financial institution on the commission’s investigation of an international banking cartel. The firm is active in other international cartel cases, including the optical disk drive, cathode ray tube and air cargo matters.

On the litigation side, the practice was retained by Korean electricity company Kepco to bring a private action against cable manufacturers. Seon Hur says Yoon & Yang is working with US firms, including Hausfeld LLP, to build its litigation presence.

In parallel with its burgeoning workload, the firm has recently hired some high-profile antitrust specialists. In April, KFTC vice chairman In Ok Son joined as senior counsel after 16 years at the agency. Son handled some of the commission’s most significant cases, including the air cargo and liquefied petroleum gas cartel proceedings. Earlier in the year, Dae Hwi Kim, a former antitrust judge at the Seoul High Court, joined as a partner, and former US Federal Trade Commission official Sue Kim was hired as a foreign attorney.

Hoil Yoon remains the head of the antitrust practice, which has 12 partners. Renowned as one of the first and finest competition lawyers in Korea, Yoon is a Who’s Who Legal nominee and chairman of the Seoul Bar Association’s antitrust law section.
