GCR 100 - 12th Edition

Sullivan & Cromwell

Professional notice

United States: New York

New York heavyweight Sullivan & Cromwell has long had a stake in Wall Street and New York’s considerable financial services industry. Sources here say it’s one of the few remaining homegrown New York industries. And since the global financial crisis crested in 2008, it’s been a frequent target of both antitrust enforcers and the private bar. That combination has positioned the widely respected antitrust team at Sullivan as one of the busiest practices in the city.

The eight-partner team, including Who’s Who Legal nominees Yvonne S Quinn and Steven L Holley, is part of the firm’s litigation group, but Holley says the group’s lawyers do it all, from courtroom battles to mergers and counselling. While the firm has an extensive presence around the country and in other jurisdictions - including the firm’s 35-year-old office in London - Holley says New York still leads the firm’s antitrust work. “I still think New York is the focus of the practice,” he says.

The firm’s institutional client relationships are deep. Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are among the Wall Street companies the firm advises, and both have recently required antitrust advice. But the antitrust team’s reach extends far beyond Wall Street. Microsoft continues to take much of the team’s time. The firm is currently defending the company at trial against rival Netscape’s monopolisation claims. It is also advising the company in its purchase of Skype, and is acting for Microsoft-led consortium CPTN Holding’s purchase of patents from Novell. Other clients include Yelp and Nasdaq.

Sullivan & Cromwell is widely recognised as a premier international litigation firm with one of the leading antitrust practices worldwide. A charter member of the “GCR 100,” S&C has been consistently cited among the world’s leading competition law firms by Global Competition Review. Year after year, the firm is retained by leading US and non-US companies as advisor in their most significant and complex antitrust matters.

Broad experience, global approach. S&C’s antitrust group takes a global, multidisciplinary approach to every matter, drawing on its deep experience and leadership position worldwide as both a litigation and a corporate, financial and transactional firm. The Group possesses extensive experience representing clients from every industry in all contexts as well as the ability to do so before competition authorities in the US, the EC and elsewhere. Importantly, S&C’s antitrust lawyers move seamlessly from advice to litigation, including any necessary appeals, without changing the team.

Distinctive client service. S&C focuses on developing long-term client relationships. Thus, the Firm’s approach to antitrust advice emphasises in-depth understanding of each client’s business. S&C’s experts provide antitrust advice relating to high-level business strategies, mergers (including related litigation), antitrust challenges and, where appropriate, challenges to other companies’ anti-competitive practices. S&C’s hallmarks are the highest quality independent advice and intense dedication to solving client problems.
