McCarthy Tétrault LLP

Professional notice

The McCarthy Tétrault competition team has seen some big changes over the past year. Over the past 12 months, the firm lost Who’s Who Legal nominee Randal T Hughes to rival Bennett Jones. Still, Who’s Who Legal nominees Oliver Borgers, Yves Comtois, Neil Finkelstein, Donald B Houston and Madeleine Renaud remain at the firm, and overall the partnership has grown, from 14 partners in 2010 to 17 currently – one of the largest groups in the country. The firm boasts a depth of experience, in both mergers and behavioural matters as well as in the courtroom in private competition cases.

Mergers have again been a strong source of work, with the team advising Maple Group on its purchase of TMX, CIBC’s purchase of the Citibank MasterCard portfolio, and BCE on its acquisition of the CTV television network. Chrysler Group, Rio Tinto and Desjardins also turned to McCarthys for merger advice last year. Behavioural cases for the McCarthy team have included acting for Hynix in the ongoing DRAM cartel class action, and Microsoft in the operating systems class action litigation. Akzo Nobel, Itwal Limited, Woodbridge, Cathay Pacific Airways and TD Bank were also litigation clients.
