Few would argue that the team at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg is among Canada’s very best. The Davies competition partnership includes Who’s Who Legal nominees George N Addy, John D Bodrug, Richard D Elliott, Kent E Thompson and Mark C Katz. With the addition of Adam Fanaki, the team now stands at 14 partners – one of the largest competition groups in the country.
The team’s year has been highlighted by its representation of client Google, in its purchases of Motorola Mobility and ITA Software. The team has also been advising Dollar Thrifty in its proposed tie-up with Hertz; Black amp; Decker in its purchase of Stanley; Fiat on its purchase of a majority stake in Chrysler; and Shaw Communications in its acquisition of Canwest, among a host of other matters. The team also helped the Canadian Real Estate Association settle a headline-grabbing abuse of dominance case, then acted for the commissioner of competition in its cases against Visa and MasterCard, as well as its challenge of the IESI-BFC/Waste Services merger. The firm says it has also been acting in a host of cartel investigations at the bureau, and in follow-on class actions against private plaintiffs.
