Bowman Gilfillan has a large and thriving competition practice. Of its seven partners, three are nominated to The International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists. They are Derek Lotter, Jean Meijer and practice head Robert Legh. The team also includes 11 senior associates, four associates and one consultant.
2010 was another busy year for the firm. It handled Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional's €3.8 billion hostile bid for Cimpor. Although the takeover attempt eventually failed, the team won merger clearance from the South African authorities. The group also represented Illovo Sugar when it sold the Pongola sugar mill to Transvaal Sugar.
On the behavioural front, Bowman Gilfillan is defending SAB Miller against allegations of abuse of dominance. The brewer is involved in litigation regarding the use of appointed distributors in exclusive territories. The firm is acting for Cape Gate in relation to alleged cartel activity in the steel and wire industry, as well as handling Pretoria Portland Cement Company's application for leniency following a dawn raid by South Africa's Competition Commission.
The firm provides compliance advice to a string of high-profile clients, including Murray & Roberts Group and Sasol. Other high profile clients include Philip Morris, Nestlé, Virgin Active South Africa and the Nampak Group.
