José del Chiaro Ferreira da Rosa leads the team at Advocacia José del Chiaro. A former SDE head, founding member of Brazilian antitrust network Ibrac, and entrant to The International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists, his reputation precedes him as one of Brazil's top antitrust specialists.
The practice added two partners this year, Maria Fernanda Pallerosi Suplicy and Ademir Antonio Pereira Júnior. The team now includes eight partners and three associates. Merger work has kept the firm busy this year. It acted for Kraft Foods on the Brazilian side of its US$19 billion acquisition of UK confectioner Cadbury, mining company VALE in its purchase of copper refiner Paranapanema, and arranged a cooperation agreement between truck makers MAN and Scania. The firm also represented major consumer goods player Hypermarcas in nine separate acquisitions, including brands from Johnson & Johnson and a large local pharmaceutical company.
The hefty transactional workload is offset by the firm's busy behavioural schedule, most notably representing Air Liquide in CADE's cartel investigation of the medicinal and industrial gases markets. This resulted in the authority handing out its largest ever fine, 2.9 billion reais (€1.3 billion) in September. Advocacia José represents Volskwagen. It also acts for aluminium producer Alcoa in an abuse of dominance matter, as well as defending the company against allegations of cartel activity in the flexible packaging market.
