Slovakia issues rare fine against construction cartel

Slovakia’s competition authority has imposed an €8.6 million fine on three companies that rigged bids for an energy infrastructure construction contract, in one of the agency’s highest-ever penalty decisions.

The EU General Court has upheld a European Commission decision fining Slovak Telekom and its parent company Deutsche Telekom €38 million for operating a margin squeeze scheme in Slovakia, but reduced the additional fine on Deutsche Telekom for recidivism to €19 million.

The European Commission has accused Slovakian state-owned railway company ZSSK of allegedly obstructing access to information during a dawn raid carried out by the enforcer in June 2016 seeking evidence of suspected anticompetitive agreements.
