The Italian Competition Act was introduced on 10 October 1990 by Law No. 287 (the Law). Further procedural and enforcement rules are established by Presidential Decree No. 217 of 30 April 1998 (Implementing Regulation). These provisions are enforced by the Italian Competition Authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (ICA))1. The ICA is an independent surveillance and enforcement body and consists of the chairman and four members, appointed for seven years' tenure, and approximately 250 officials. European Community competition law is directly applicable, including the various EC Commission's notices.
