Canada: Foreign Investment Review

Canada has a new majority Liberal government headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Prior Liberal governments have not evidenced a propensity to use the Investment Canada Act (the Act) to block foreign acquisitions of Canadian businesses. However, it has been almost a decade since the Liberals were the ruling party in Canada and much has changed in the world since then. On 4 November 2015, Navdeep Singh Bains was appointed as Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (formerly called the Minister of Industry) and will be the minister responsible for the administration of the Act.
