Total eclipse of the part: The Tipline for 21 August 2017

We urge everyone who wants to stare directly into the sun during even the partial eclipse in Washington, DC, to pick up a pair of safety glasses - various Smithsonian outposts are giving them away while supplies last. We didn't realise quite how big today was for places not in the path of total eclipse, until we saw this in a criminal antitrust docket for Sacramento federal court: "In order to accommodate interested parties who wish to view the solar eclipse, the parties are hereby notified that the time for the status conference as to defendant Donald M Parker currently set for 9 AM on 8/21/2017 is changed to 1.30 PM on 8/21/2017 in courtroom 5 before senior judge William B Shubb."
