China International Marine Containers has abandoned its intended acquisition of Maersk Container Industry over the Department of Justice’s opposition to the billion-dollar global tie-up. Assistant attorney general Jonathan Kanter said yesterday that the deal would have cemented CIMC’s dominant position “in an already consolidated industry” while eliminating “an innovative, independent competitor”, substantially increasing the risk of coordination among the remaining suppliers in an already closely-connected market.
