The two antitrust trials before the US District Court for the Southern District of New York this fall have moved at different paces. Judge John Koeltl, overseeing the jury trial of a former banker accused of manipulating currency rates, said he does not impose time limits on criminal trials. He periodically stopped proceedings to allow the jury to stretch and offered mini-history lessons on the courthouse. Meanwhile, Judge Victor Marrero described the pre-trial pace of T-Mobile/Sprint as a speeding freight train with documents flying out the window. With the trial now underway, Judge Marrero has made timekeeping a priority, keeping tallies of counsels’ accumulated hours and minutes at the end of each day.
