Out of cluck: The Tipline for 8 July 2022

Three trials, two hung juries and one sweeping acquittal. That’s what it took to defeat the Department of Justice’s antitrust division in its steadfast bid to hold five – initially 10 – broiler chicken executives criminally accountable for their companies’ alleged cartelisation of the industry. After a day of deliberations following the third trial, a Colorado jury last night acquitted all five remaining defendants. Assistant attorney general Jonathan Kanter, whose comments after the second hung jury ruffled a few feathers, has yet to remark on yesterday’s outcome.
