Microsoft president Brad Smith is cameoing as a James Stewart character in a Frank Capra film this holiday season but, unfortunately for him, it's not “It's a Wonderful Life”. Instead, Smith is hightailing it from Seattle to the Federal Trade Commission in search of a guardian angel to salvage his company’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Meanwhile, as the new merger guidelines are being circulated internally at the US agencies, the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act is not in Congress’s defence spending.
