Move fast and break things: The Tipline for 25 July 2019

Facebook’s old mantra was “move fast and break things”, and the Federal Trade Commission took notice. In announcing a $5 billion settlement that bars the company from certain data usage practices, Commissioner Christine Wilson said she became convinced the agency needed to have Facebook “slow down and treat consumer privacy with care”. But with one investigation closed, Facebook said yesterday that the FTC had opened another. This time, the agency is probing whether the company has broken competition.
