A funder has accused counsel that scuttled an American Express interchange fee settlement by sharing confidential documents with Mastercard’s lawyers of refusing to pay him in a parallel lawsuit.

The Federal Trade Commission and House Judiciary Committee appear to be stuck in a stalemate regardless of whether their quarrel occurs in letters or public hearings. Pressed by Republican lawmakers about the FTC’s responses (or lack thereof) to various document demands, the commission’s director of congressional relations had very little to say. “I’m not able to provide that information today, but we're happy to continue talking to your staff,” Jeanne Bumpus said.
