College try: The Tipline for 4 September 2019

US law enforcers are taking a hard look at college admissions, and it goes beyond the bribery that the Federal Bureau of Investigation uncovered in Operation Varsity Blues. The Department of Justice has been investigating a college admissions association for nearly two years for potential antitrust violations in the association’s rules for members. The association says it put the rules in place to maintain ethical behaviour in college admissions, but the DOJ has told it the rules may actually restrict competition between schools. We have more on that investigation, plus a bill moving through the California state legislature that could upend “amateurism” in college athletics.
