Breaking off the Cengage-ment: The Tipline for 5 May 2020

Antitrust scrutiny led to the demise of another high-profile deal yesterday, as textbook publishers McGraw-Hill and Cengage abandoned their proposed merger. When travel technology companies Sabre and Farelogix cancelled their tie-up on Friday, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority was able to take all the credit as a US federal court rejected the Department of Justice’s challenge to the deal. This time, the Antitrust Division can claim a larger role. Cengage said one reason the companies cancelled the merger was an inability to agree a remedies package with the DOJ.
