Amid antitrust soul searching, FTC prepares for new leadership

A top Federal Trade Commission official says he expects the agency to have four or five new commissioners by early May – who will enter an agency embroiled in a larger debate in the US and abroad about antitrust’s proper goals and standards.

The Federal Trade Commission and House Judiciary Committee appear to be stuck in a stalemate regardless of whether their quarrel occurs in letters or public hearings. Pressed by Republican lawmakers about the FTC’s responses (or lack thereof) to various document demands, the commission’s director of congressional relations had very little to say. “I’m not able to provide that information today, but we're happy to continue talking to your staff,” Jeanne Bumpus said.
