2015 saw US-focused consultancy BRG recruit a pair of senior economists; associate director Jeffrey Klenk, formerly of Econ One Research, joined in Washington, DC, as did Katherine Lee, previously a principal at Cornerstone Research. While the practice lost Jose Alberro, who is now based at Cornerstone Research, the practice grew overall – especially at the junior levels.
Six out of the firm’s 48-strong senior leadership have been nominated to Who’s Who Legal: Competition; these are Henry Kahwaty, David Scheffman, Jeffrey Church, Oliver Grawe, Robin Cantor and David Teece. Kahwaty, Scheffman and David Kaplan are the firm’s competition co-heads.
In 2015, BRG was involved in Par Petroleum’s acquisition of Mid-Pac petroleum, a transaction which was reviewed both by the US Federal Trade Commission and Hawaii’s attorney general; the FTC’s investigation moved to the second request stage. BRG managing director Oliver Grawe provided analysis on petrol terminals and gas stations, and helped both companies comply with the FTC’s second requests. The FTC commission voted 4-1 in favour of clearing the deal with divestments – with dissenting commissioner Joshua Wright’s vote based not on a rejection of the merger, but on an argument that no remedy was necessary.
