Anderson Mori & Tomotsune

17 March 2015

Japan

Things remain rosy at Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, the firm regularly labelled the best antitrust team in Japan. Its four Who’s Who Legal: Competition nominees are all renowned practitioners across the antitrust bar: Hideto Ishida, Shigeyoshi Ezaki, Yusuke Nakano and Vassili Moussis. Moussis adds a much-vaunted dimension to Anderson Mori & Tomotsune’s practice as he is a specialist in EU competition law with a year’s training at DG Comp.

The firm is firing on all cylinders, Ezaki says, with much of its work remaining confidential. A taste of Anderson Mori’s deal work includes being counsel to Publicis in its now-defunct mega merger with Omnicom, and advising Thermo Fisher in its tie-up with Life Technologies on which Ishida and partner Etsuko Hara advised. The firm also acted on the sale of Heinz to Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital.

Cartel work is keeping Anderson Mori particularly busy, with the firm involved in almost all of the most significant matters being investigated by the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC). The firm is representing a major Japanese company in the freight forwarding cartel probe, and another big domestic business in the power cable manufacturers’ investigation.
