Covington & Burling LLP

05 December 2013

Covington & Burling has maintained an effective antitrust practice in Europe despite several changes to its team. Former practice head Lars Kjølbye left the firm in July for Latham & Watkins; soon after partners Georg Berrisch and David Hull went to other rivals too. Covington’s Brussels office still has oneWho’s Who Legal nominee, Damien Geradin, and promoted Michael Clancy, who has represented Ryanair in the past, to special counsel in August.

The firm is advising on several high-profile deals. Verizon’s US$130 billion acquisition of Vodafone’s remaining stake in Verizon Wireless is the third-largest deal in corporate history and Covington’s Brussels antitrust team is advising on the European filing. Covington is also acting as counsel to Microsoft on its purchase of Nokia’s devices and services business. Covington is advising travel websites Expedia and TripAdvisor on their complaints against Google’s online search and advertising practices. The firm is also supporting Huawei on its complaint to the commission against wireless technology producer InterDigital for allegedly abusing its dominant position with regard to standard essential patents.

United States: Government Antitrust

By virtue of both the antitrust group’s work and its immense talent, Covington & Burling has entrenched itself among the top competition practices in the city. Over the past five years or so, the firm has revamped its antitrust group from the ground up, hiring practice co-leaders and Who’s Who Legal nominees Thomas O Barnett and Deborah Garza from the highest ranks of the DoJ’s antitrust division, then adding a talented group of lawyers from Howrey – includingWho’s Who Legal-nominated counsel Alan M Wiseman. Another Who’s Who Legal nominee, partner Theodore Voorhees, is the past chair of the American Bar Association’s antitrust section. The team continued to expand its DC partnership last year, electing in-house candidates Michael Fanelli and Jonathan Gimblett.
