Alrud has a highly regarded competition practice, with a total of 12 lawyers working on antitrust matters. Senior partner and Who’s Who Legal nominee Vassily Rudomino leads the practice, which he says has been “significantly strengthened” in recent years.

He is a co-founder and a head of the partnership council for competition support in the CIS countries. Partner Alexander Zharskiy focuses on competition in the banking and finance markets. Both are members of FAS expert competition councils, including in the financial services, oil and retail markets.

Over the past year, the firm says it has strengthened the competition practice through promotions and other developments. Associate Anna Numerova finished her LLM programme at Georgetown University and was selected as the Russian representative for the International Committee of the American Bar Association’s antitrust section. Elena Kazak was promoted to attorney last November, and lawyer German Zakharov joined the team in early in 2010 from the FAS’s cartel department.

The Alrud competition lawyers have had another impressive year of casework - especially in merger control, where the firm advised on multiple high-profile deals. The team advised SC Johnson & Son on its purchase of the insecticides business of Sara Lee; Reckitt Benckiser on the purchase of Russia’s Medcom; Marfrig Alimentos on its international purchase of Keystone Foods; and Coty Germany on its takeover of Kalina International’s cosmetics business, among many others. The firm has been deeply involved in behavioural and advisory work as well. The firm advised LG Electronics and Lego on their respective marketing and distribution policies last year, while advising American Express on payment systems and a pharmacy chain on calculating its market share, among other matters.
