GCR 100 - 11th Edition

Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP

18 January 2011

Again topping the table is the capable, roundly-respected competition team at Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP.

Some recent losses in Blake's ranks were quickly offset by the hiring of well-regarded partners Randall Hofley and Deborah Salzberger, both of whom joined from the Stikeman Elliott LLP competition team. With six International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers nominees among its whopping 21 partners, the team boasts serious bench depth for tackling heavyweight deals and investigations.

The Blakes team has recently advised on the first 'second information request' in the history of Canadian merger law - acting for Suncor in its tie-up with PetroCanada, which eventually received competition clearance. Other merger matters of the past year include advising BHP Billiton on its US$40 billion offer for Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, Nestlé in its sale of Alcon to Novartis, Bemis in its proposed acquistion of Rio Tinto's Alcan division, Agrium in its buy of CF Industries and Waste Services in its recent contentious tie-up with IESI-BFC, among a host of others.

In behavioural matters, the Blakes competition team has recently acted for Arkema in the hydrogen peroxide litigation, Samsung in the DRAM class litigation and Lufthansa in the air cargo class action. The team has also acted on a host of cartel investigations before the bureau.
