Michael Rosenthal leads the competition practice at Hunton & Williams LLP in Brussels. The six-strong team lost two associates last year, but continues to have three partners, including Paul McGeown who joined from Linklaters in 2009. Rosenthal says Paul's joining "significantly boosted" the firm's capabilities. "We are handling increasingly visible matters for high-profile clients at both EU and national level," he says.
Despite the economic downturn, Hunton & Williams has been very active on transactional work. The firm advised Aareal Bank's planned acquisition of WestImmo from WestLB, and represented Glencore before the European Commission on its acquisition of Chemoil. Rosenthal is also advising Chevron on its sale of parts of its downstream business in Europe.
On the behavioural side, partner Robert Klotz represents Czech energy company EPH in the Czech electricity cartel case. McGeown is representing several SkyTeam Alliance carriers in relation to the European Commission's investigation into airline alliances. Rosenthal is also advising K+S Aktiengesellschaft on the commission's de-icing salt investigation, and bathroom accessories manufacturer Duravit as co-counsel with Gleiss Lutz on its appeal against DG Comp's bathroom cartel decision.
United States: Government Antitrust
Hunton & Williams LLP takes great pride in its ability to recruit lawyers with recent agency experience. Practice head D Bruce Hoffman has experience at the US Federal Trade Commission, while another 10 antitrust specialists at the firm have experience working at either the FTC or the US Department of Justice. Hoffman is supported in DC by a further five partners, two of counsel and 12 associates.
The firm is defending Action Ready Mix Concrete in a series of class action lawsuits alleging price fixing in the markets for cement and concrete in Florida.
It is also representing two defendants in an appeal against a finding of input foreclosure in markets for anti-anxiety drugs - the In re Lorazepam & Clorazepate Antitrust Litigation.
The team represents MasterCard on a variety of antitrust issues, and it is acting for Silver Lake Technology Management in a putative class action filed in the District of Massachusetts.
Hunton & Williams is advising a global retailer and an international media company on investigations under way at the US Federal Trade Commission. It is also acting for a leading pharmaceutical company in state attorneys general investigations in Maryland and Florida.
