At Marques Mendes & Associados name partner and Who's Who nominee Mário Marques Mendes leads the competition team.
Individual reputations carry a lot of sway in Portugal; the competition bar is small and everybody knows one another. Marques Mendes is well-regarded among his peers. He works alongside partner Pedro Vilarinho Pires. One senior associate and two associates support the pair.
The firm is a competition boutique - a rarity in Portugal - though it also handles work in related fields, including energy, banking, labour law and litigation. Unlike other Portuguese competition practices, it is not supported by a large corporate group. The firm advised ETE, a Portuguese group active in port terminal services, on its public bid for the provision of services to the Port of Lisbon. This included assisting in various competition issues raised by a rival bidder.
The team gave advice to the Cross Group - an Austrian investment company - in merger control proceedings related to its acquisition of the Peguform Group, a Luxembourg based company, which manufactures systems and modules for the interior and exterior of passenger cars. The firm has also handled merger work for Grupo Copo, a Spanish manufacturer and retailer or car parts, and ECS, a risk capital fund's management company.
On the behavioural front, Marques Mendes & Associados represented the European Commission before the General Court against three Portuguese companies appealing against the commission's decision in the prestressing steel case.
