Pereira Sáragga Leal Oliveira Martins Júdice & Associados (PLMJ)

18 January 2011

Pereira Sáragga Leal Oliveira Martins Júdice & Associados (PLMJ) has both a large practice and a strong reputation. Rivals cite the firm as a leading light of the Portuguese competition bar, involved in the "all the most important cases". The 16-strong team is led by partners and Who's Who nominees José Luís da Cruz Vilaça and Ricardo Oliveira. They are supported by six senior associates, one senior consultant, four associates and three trainees.

The firm's deep bench allows the group to provide competition advice to a string of high-profile clients, including Unilever, Nestlé, Bayer, Intel, Siemens, Barclays and Google.

The firm provided advice to Telefónica when the Portuguese Government used its share in Portugal Telecom to block Telefonica's bid for Vivo. Vivo is Telefónica and Portugal Telecoms' mobile phone joint venture.

The team is representing Eurest - part of the Compass Group - in what the firm describes as the largest antitrust proceedings opened by the authority to date. It also acted for Zon when the company appealed against a €53 million fine handed down to Zon and PTC for an alleged abuse of dominance in the broadband market.

On the transactional side, the team has an equally thick docket. It advised Metso in its acquisition of Tamfelt and Alliance Healthcare in its acquisitions of Proconfar, Medimadeira and Funchalfar.
