Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP

14 January 2010

The 13-lawyer competition team at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, led by partner Mark Nicholson, has had another busy year, including work on one of the largest deals in the world last year.

Nicholson and his team helped guide Pfizer through it's high-profile, US$68 billion merger with rival Wyeth. It was the first cross-border merger cleared under Canada's new two-tier merger regime - quite a milestone for both the bureau and the Cassels Brock team. The firm also helped clear two billion-dollar mergers in the gold mining industry, including New Gold/Western Goldfields and Gold Corp/Gold Eagle, continuing the firm's track record as having the go-to competition team for deals in the metallurgy market.

On the behavioural side, the Cassels Brock team acted for Waste Management in an abuse of dominance investigation under the Competition Act, as well as acting for various companies in cartel investigation and class actions. Other client work included acting for Interac Corporation, Canada's largest payment card network, on competition law matters related to its restructuring.
