Wolfgang Hellmann

Blake DawsonDr Wolfgang Hellmann is based in the Sydney office of Blake Dawson, specialising in merger control and cartel law. Prior to joining the firm in 2000, he worked for four years with a leading global law firm, practising European and German competition law in Düsseldorf and Brussels. In Australia, Wolfgang has assisted many Australian and international clients in obtaining merger clearance (including, recently, BHP Billiton's takeover bid for Rio Tinto and Google's acquisition of DoubleClick). Wolfgang's extensive merger control experience includes negotiating complex remedies, coordinating multi-jurisdictional filings (particularly in the Asia-Pacific region) and conducting parallel foreign investment processes. Wolfgang has acted for domestic and international clients in cartel immunity applications and major ACCC investigations into price-fixing conduct (eg, Visy in the corrugated fibreboard container cartel). He has also acted for BASF in class action proceedings concerning the vitamins cartel.In Europe, Wolfgang has acted for clients in many merger control processes before the EU Commission and the German BKartA. He has represented clients in the graphite electrodes and lysine cartel investigations and sports associations (including DFB and FIA) in several court actions challenging the collective selling of TV and marketing rights. Wolfgang has published widely in the area of merger control regulation and cartel law enforcement. He obtained an LLM from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995 and a doctorate degree from the University of Cologne in 1997. He is a member of the Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht eV and the International Bar Association.
