Robert Russell is a senior partner at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and national chair of the firm’s competition/antitrust and foreign investment practice. Mr Russell has acted as senior counsel in multi-district class actions in Canada with respect to proceedings related to various sectors: airlines, technology, food products, petroleum industry, pharmaceuticals and automotive. He has appeared in trial and appellate courts across Canada, and before the Canadian Competition Tribunal on numerous occasions, acting on behalf of the commissioner of competition and private entities. Mr Russell has also acted for private sector clients in many of Canada’s most significant and complex mergers, including the acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart Corp by Loblaw Companies Ltd, the acquisition of Dome Petroleum by Amoco; the acquisition of Provigo by Loblaws; and the acquisition of Compaq by Hewlett-Packard. Mr Russell has been retained as a special adviser to the Canadian commissioner of competition concerning amendments to the Competition Act and has frequently been invited to appear before a number of Canadian Parliamentary Committees in respect of competition law reform.
