Rien Broekstra (admitted to the Bar in 2015) litigates on Dutch and European patents before the Dutch Courts and the European Patent Office.
Before earning his LLM degree in information law (University of Amsterdam) in 2014, Rien was trained as a computer scientist, receiving his MSc degree in Telematics (networking technology) from Twente University in 2007. Because of his solid engineering background, Rien is well placed to act in cases relating to highly complex technology – particularly in the fields of electrical engineering, software patents and telecommunications, including Standard Essential Patents.
Clients praise Rien for his in-depth understanding of the technology and the ability to put that understanding to effective use in the courtroom. Rien was recognized as a “rising star” in the 2019 Legal 500, and the 2020/21 IP Stars. Notable clients include smartphone manufacturers Xiaomi, Oppo and Wiko and electronics manufacturer Delta Electronics.
Rien is a member of AIPPI, and a contributing member of The Sedona Conference.
Rien is fluent in German and English.
