Martin Bechtold is a partner at Eversheds Sutherland and head of the firm’s competition and antitrust practice in Germany, practising out of Munich and Brussels.

He has more than 30 years of experience in antitrust law, advising on mergers, joint ventures, cartels, dominance issues and all contractual matters that could raise competition law questions. He has successfully advised merging parties on numerous highly complex transactions, including heavily contested acquisitions, hostile takeovers and in-depth investigations raising novel questions of merger control. Martin also assists undertakings in cartel investigations and settlement procedures as well as in investigations into alleged abuses of dominance.

In addition to working with Germany’s Federal Cartel Office, Martin has been a partner for leading international law firms in Frankfurt and Brussels. He has extensive experience in advising and representing clients across various industries (including automotive, engineering and financial services) in significant merger control, antitrust and abuse proceedings in Germany and abroad, as well as before the European Commission and the European courts in Luxembourg.

Martin is a member of the American Bar Association, the German Antitrust Lawyers’ Association and the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property.

He has been recognised as a leading antitrust and competition lawyer by various publications, including Chambers Europe, The Legal 500: Germany and Germany’s JUVE Handbook. Furthermore, he is recommended for competition and antitrust law by Best Lawyers in Germany and Best Lawyers in Belgium.
