Joanna Christoforou has experience representing clients in EU and UK competition matters before the European Commission, the European Court, the Competition and Markets Authority, the Financial Conduct Authority, the Competition Appeal Tribunal, the High Court, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court and antitrust authorities in other jurisdictions. She defends clients in cartel or abuse of dominance investigations and court proceedings, competition disputes, dawn raids, damages actions, advises clients on competition compliance matters, and represents clients in complex merger control matters. Joanna works across a broad range of industries, including pharma and life sciences, technology, retail, grocery, e-commerce, financial services, commodities and healthcare. She is admitted to practise in England and Wales and in the Republic of Ireland.
Joanna is a member of the team that scored a landmark victory in the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal for Sainsbury’s against Visa in the interchange fee damages litigation. Having advised during the administrative proceedings, Joanna also currently plays a leading role in three appeals at the CAT against the CMA’s infringement decisions in Hydrocortisone, Liothyronine and Prochlorperazine relating to allegations of market sharing, pay-for-delay and unfair and excessive pricing. These proceedings have been used by the CAT to test the use of novel procedures, including ambulatory drafts. Joanna is also advising individuals in director disqualification proceedings. Joanna played a leading role in the first legal challenge to the CMA’s use of dawn raid warrants, which was recognised as Behavioural Matter of the Year – Europe, and was shortlisted as a Rising Star – Litigation by Euromoney LMG Europe Women (2019).
