Gerry O’Brien is a consultant in the team, and has been described in the last two Chambers Asia-Pacific guides as being ‘an associate to watch’ in the field of antitrust practice and ‘a great example of a real competition law expert’. Gerry joined Mayer Brown JSM in Hong Kong in mid-2007 after seven years practising competition law in Australia (both with the law firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques and via an in-house role with Telstra Corporation Limited).Gerry has significant experience assisting large corporates to develop and implement tailored trade practices compliance programmes, including major banks and resources companies, and has worked on a large number of merger control filings in regimes including China.Gerry also has experience in advising on merger control issues in China, and in conjunction with several Mayer Brown practitioners was part of the team that won Global Competition Review’s 2011 ‘M&A Transaction of the Year, Asia-Pacific, Middle East & Africa’ award. He has prepared China antitrust filings for many clients, regularly liaises with competition law regulators and assists businesses to deal with regulatory investigations. Gerry has also prepared many successful applications to competition regulators on behalf of clients, obtaining authorisation for relevant conduct under ‘public interest’ exceptions to anti-competitive conduct prohibitions.
