Fernando Carreño is the head partner in Von Wobeser y Sierra’s competition and antitrust practice and is a key partner in the firm’s corporate and M&A practice. With almost 20 years of experience in antitrust matters, he has been involved in the most important cartel and market investigations in Mexico.

Nowadays, he is involved in more than 60 per cent of the investigations that are carried out by COFECE. He is also one of the most active attorneys in merger control procedures in Mexico, offering advice on both antitrust and corporate aspects of transactions.

Fernando has broad experience in the negotiation of remedies and avoidance of divestitures in complex merger review cases. Furthermore, he has acted as one of the few experts called by COFECE as an external adviser on international panels and has been requested to be part of the selected group of practitioners responsible for reviewing antitrust-related provisions, guidance and criteria published as a consequence of the enforcement of the new Mexican Antitrust Act.

In April 2018, he was named as ‘Lawyer of the Year – Under 40’ by Global Competition Review.

Fernando obtained a law degree (equivalent to a JD), with honours, from the Free University Law School, where he currently teaches the antitrust and competition class. He also obtained an LLM from Northwestern University in the United States.
