Chris Fonteijn was appointed chairman of the board of the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) on 1 April 2013. Prior to this, he was chairman of both the Netherlands Competition Authority, since July 2011, and the Post and Telecoms Authority (OPTA) since 2005. In his capacity as chairman of the commission of OPTA, he sat on the board of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) between 2008 and 2011, and chaired BEREC in 2011.From 1980 until his appointment as chairman of the commission of the OPTA on 1 September 2005, Chris worked as a lawyer at NautaDutilh in Rotterdam, where he was made partner in 1988. At NautaDutilh he specialised in business and energy law, and over the years held a variety of positions. For several years he worked for NautaDutilh in the Middle East, and during his last years with the firm, Chris was director of the energy and utilities group. Chris studied law at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands.Chris Fonteijn will leave office on 1 May 2018. His successor is expected to be nominated later in 2018. To celebrate five years of ACM and to mark the end of the chairmanship of Chris Fonteijn, ACM hosted a conference on 26 April 2018 entitled ‘The Digital Economy – Friend or Foe’.
