Bernardo Gouthier Macedo (PhD, University of Campinas, Brazil) is LCA’s managing partner dedicated to economics and law, with applied knowledge of service regulation, expertise in sectoral economics, and vast experience in the institutional environment and the requirements of antitrust authorities and regulators. He has led many projects for major firms in competition economics, economic litigation, regulation and commercial defence. Among the most recent high-profile Brazilian merger cases, he was in charge of the economic team who advised the parties towards the settlement reached in Camargo Corrêa/Cimpor (cement), BrasilFoods BRF (processed foods), DASA/MD1 (labs), CSN/Usiminas (steel), and Oxiteno/American Chemical (chemistry) – some of the most complex merger proceedings in our jurisdiction. The Camargo Corrêa/Cimpor and Oxiteno/American Chemical deals were nominated GCR’s ‘Merger Control Matter of the Year – Americas’ award. In 2015, LCA won in the same category of the GCR’s 5th Annual Awards for its contribution to the antitrust proceedings that led CADE to clear Kroton’s acquisition of Anhanguera (education sector).Since 2012 Mr Macedo has featured in Who’s Who Legal: Competition Economists, and since 2011 he has been an NGA to the Brazilian delegation. He is an officer in charge of economic issues at the Brazilian Institute of Competition, Consumer & International Trade Studies (IBRAC), the main professional association for competition lawyers and economists in Brazil. He is also a lecturer at the continuing education programme in law at GV Law, Fundação Getúlio Vargas. Among other professional duties, he is a former member of the board of Banco do Brasil SA, the biggest Brazilian bank (2007–2015), a member of the board of the Development Bank of Minas Gerais, and a former special adviser to the Ministry of Finance (2003).
