Amitabh Kumar

In an illustrious career spanning 31 years, Amitabh Kumar has handled diverse assignments in the sphere of regulation, public finance and policy. He served as the first director general of the Competition Commission of India from 2004 to 2009, was involved in the Policy and Regulatory Framework set up in the initial years of the Competition Authority, and further assisted the government in drafting the Competition (Amendment) Bill, 2007.Amitabh was also responsible for drafting nine implementing regulations, besides making a significant contribution to the Competition Advocacy initiative of the authority.He was the departmental representative for the Income Tax Department at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal for six years, where he handled complex tax cases.He also has consulting experience with the African Development Bank, the World Bank, UNDP and the Department for International Development (UK) in strategic policy areas. He has also served on the boards of several public sector undertakings.Recently, he was member of a committee appointed by the government to recommend a National Competition Policy document and necessary amendments to the Competition Act, 2002.During the past couple of years at JSA, he has handled complex cases of abuse and cartels besides merger filings and organising competition compliance programmes.
