Ms Smita Jhingran, presently secretary of the Competition Commission of India, is a senior civil servant with over 31 years of experience in the government of India. She is an officer of the Indian Revenue Service and has held a wide range of positions in the revenue department that involved implementation of tax laws, tax-related investigations, framing of tax assessments and judicial representations. She holds a masters in economics from Gokhale Institute of Politics. She also holds an M.Phil. degree and a bachelor degree in Law.
She has been secretary of the Competition Commission of India since February 2013. As secretary, she is involved in all activities relating to proceedings of the commission, the framing of various rules and regulations, the setting-up of infrastructure, the recruitment of professional and support staff, training and advocacy. In addition, she heads the international cooperation division of the commission. The secretary is the statutory and nodal functionary of the commission, and the commission is represented by the secretary in all legal proceedings.
